Formed in the basement of a nondescript home in Mansfield, Ohio in early 1996, the members of The GC5 set out with the same goal as so many of their predecessors - to beat the boredom of everyday life through rocknroll.
Over the course of a couple of 7"s, a number of shows, and a move to Cleveland, the boys continued to refine their sound, influenced by the drive and urgency of late 70's British Punk, Chuck Berry guitar riffs, and the melodicism and bitterness of Elvis Costello, with a working-class ethic free of the thuggishness and phony right-wing populism that plagues most modern Oi! music. Following Chris's departure for biology research work, the band quickly replaced him with longtime friend Paul Weaver, and released their debut full-length on Long Beach's Outsider Records in July 2000.
A year of constant touring ensued, during which time they shared the stage with just about everyone, including the Dropkick Murphys, Hudson Falcons, Bouncing Souls, Swingin Utters, Dwarves, Business, Agnostic Front, and Oxymoron.
They also found time to record a 5 song ep on Leprock Records during this time, featuring 4 new songs, plus a cover of "Bastards of Young" by Midwestern kindred spirits the Replacements.
